EU summit December 14th and 15th, 2006 in Brussels marked with “expansion fatigue”

The summit of state and government leaders of EU member states that took place on December 14th and 15th, 2006 was marked by the accession of Romania and Bulgaria on January 1st, 2007, as well as by the simultaneous transition of the EU council presidency from Finland to Germany. In the face of the rapid pace, with the latest new member states being admitted (in May 2004 in the context of the largest round of expansions up to now, the number of EU member states grew from 15 to 25), talk was indeed of a certain “expansion fatigue”, as the Austrian foreign commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner expressed.
