The introduction of the Euro has nourished scholarly interest in the question whether and to what degree the common currency would contribute to European identity. This article argues that most of the analyses put forward lack an understanding of money, and therefore come up with misleading expectations. Money in general is a social power relation that comes with an institutional architecture. It is demonstrated that the current architecture does not strengthen but undermine the young germs of European identity.
